and sciences of dental laboratory operations and to further the
economic and educational interest of dental laboratory owners and
technicians by encouraging the practices of high standards of personal
and professional conduct, integrity, honor and courtesy among
individuals serving the dental laboratory industry."
The 147th Annual Session
will be held Thursday, April 28 to Sunday, May 1, 2016 in Hilton Head, SC, at
the Hilton Head Marriott Resort and Spa. This will be the 17th joint meeting with the
SC Dental Association and other members of the state dental
team. An exciting agenda that offers excellent professional
and technical programs is being planned.

have seen many changes in the last 20 years in our chosen profession.
The materials we use, the machines we use, and the knowledge we need to
be successful today is vastly different than when I started working as
a model and die technician while still in high school.
evolution in our profession is exciting, challenging, and very scary at
times. CAD/CAM is a fact of life for laboratories today. It is being
used in all facets of dental technology... even in removables. I
remember thinking “a machine will never be able to do what I do.” I was
right in one sense, it can’t do what I did... it can do more. Machines
can do more units with more consistent margin and fit. The exciting
thing about these machines is they still need an educated dental
technician to operate them. So the machines let us use our knowledge to
become more efficient. Who doesn’t want to be more efficient?
is the key to success in any business. We are the ones clinicians turn
to for help in most matters regarding restoring a person's teeth
(materials, fixed vs. removable, implant position, etc.). It is
imperative that we understand these new materials as well as the
materials we have used for the last twenty years. Striving to be the
best we can be elevates our profession. It makes us a member of a
dental team, which is a win/win for everyone, most importantly, the

other technicians at the Eastern Conference of Dental Laboratories in
Concord, NC and with dentists and dental technicians at our joint
meeting of the SCDLA and the SCDA in Hilton Head, SC this Spring. Come
