Our President, Bradford Duncan, CDT

Brad Duncan, CDTI have seen many changes in the last 20 years in our chosen profession. The materials we use, the machines we use, and the knowledge we need to be successful today is vastly different than when I started working as a model and die technician while still in high school.

This evolution in our profession is exciting, challenging, and very scary at times. CAD/CAM is a fact of life for laboratories today. It is being used in all facets of dental technology... even in removables. I remember thinking “a machine will never be able to do what I do.” I was right in one sense, it can’t do what I did... it can do more. Machines can do more units with more consistent margin and fit. The exciting thing about these machines is they still need an educated dental technician to operate them. So the machines let us use our knowledge to become more efficient. Who doesn’t want to be more efficient?

Education is the key to success in any business. We are the ones clinicians turn to for help in most matters regarding restoring a person's teeth (materials, fixed vs. removable, implant position, etc.). It is imperative that we understand these new materials as well as the materials we have used for the last twenty years. Striving to be the best we can be elevates our profession. It makes us a member of a dental team, which is a win/win for everyone, most importantly, the patient.

The SCDLA offers all technicians a chance to learn with other technicians at the Eastern Conference of Dental Laboratories in Concord, NC and with dentists and dental technicians at our joint meeting of the SCDLA and the SCDA in Hilton Head, SC this Spring. Come out and join us for fun, fellowship, and learning. Check our website for dates on these meetings and other opportunities to learn.

Best Regards,
Bradford N. Duncan, CDT
President, SCDLA
